As the founder of Virtual Networkers, I’ve observed firsthand what works—and what doesn’t—when it comes to networking. Recently, I asked myself, “What’s the single most important networking tip I could offer?”
The answer came to me immediately: Be present.

My number one networking tip? Be present!
And when I say “be present,” I mean two things:
- Attend meetings and fully engage with what the group offers.
- Be mentally present while networking.
Let’s dive into each of these.
Attend the networking meetings
Take a look at your calendar. Are your networking meetings blocked off? Do you find yourself tempted to skip them?
Networking is about showing up—both physically and mentally. It’s tough to build relationships, share your story, or get referrals when you don’t attend the meetings.
If your networking group offers additional resources, such as an online community or special events, make an effort to participate in those as well.
I once had a Virtual Networkers member decide not to renew her membership because she hadn’t received any referrals. I gently reminded her that in the four months she was with us, she attended only five meetings. It’s challenging to get referrals, clients, or even friends when you’re not consistently present.
So, show up—and do it consistently!
Be present while networking
As women entrepreneurs, we’re often praised for our multitasking abilities. But when it comes to networking, single-tasking is key.
It might be tempting to check your phone or work on your laptop during a meeting, but doing so means you’re not fully engaged. You could be missing out on valuable insights, connections, or opportunities.
Just as you wouldn’t multitask during a client call, treat your networking meetings with the same level of respect. It’s sacred time, and you’re worthy of being fully present.
Final thoughts
Whether you’re new to a networking group or have been a member for a while, it’s never too late to adopt a “be present” mindset. Here are a few final tips:
- Block off all your networking meetings on your calendar and commit to not booking over them.
- Keep your phone out of sight during meetings to minimize distractions.
- Write “be present” on a sticky note as a reminder to stay focused, both physically and mentally.
I want your networking experience to be fulfilling and worthwhile. You deserve a rich and rewarding journey, and these tips will help you get there. Good luck!
